Starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne, Instant Family is a charming story that you have probably missed but need to see! Having focused on their careers for most of their lives, Pete and Ellie decide to adopt three siblings. All of which with very different personalities.

With a moody teenage, anxious middle child and a toddler who is both equal parts crazy and adorable, their lives are changed completely. Learning to navigate the new world of parenthood, whilst also presenting comedy chops and engaging heartfelt moments, the film goes back in time, as director Sean Anders’ provides what feels like a classic feature from the late 80s, early 90s.

From first glance, you would assume that a lot of the story has been told many times before, yet it’s a fresh look at the parents looking to foster and help others is enticing and comedic. None of them knows what they are doing, but with the guidance of the fantastic Karen (Octavia Spencer) and strange Sharon (Tig Notaro), their training makes for a lot of fun as a viewer.

In a world full of action, the twosomes choice to take on the three children is lovable, and you can’t help but be overjoyed by many of the crazy moments that happen on screen. The whole feel is that of Mrs Doubtfire, Cheaper by the Dozen and Parenthood. Hearty family comedies that may not have been the best when they were first made, but we all love and cherish to this day now. Family favourites that are proving to stand the test of time.

It is safe to say as well that the story doesn’t stay straight to the point throughout either, which makes it even more of a delight. Twists and turns are added, and they bring a clever account into the mi from Anders’, who could have kept the whole thing safe. Within his work, he also proves that in the heart of everything, he also wants people to see the ups and downs of the foster system, which may not be how many people think it is. Providing Byrne and Whalberg with a way of showing that what could have been a predictable pairing, story and character base for them, is a lot different and a thriving opportunity for the two.

Although the ending may be predictable and not all of the film works, the story, cast and direction of Instant Family makes it a heart-warming view, which will remind you of the classics you grew up loving. Anders’ proves sometimes the best films are left untouched.
