Good Morning Lovelies, 

Playing in the school playground as a youngster, I was often caught up in a game of it or tag as it is otherwise known with my friends. Hours could be spent enjoying the freedom of not being it. However, it never escalated into the levels of Tag, a film based on real-life events.

 In 2013, an article was published highlighting how a group of men, who had met at school, were taking part in an epic and lengthy game of tag. All of which to make sure that they never lost contact with each other as they grew up. For a month, every year, they go all out to make sure that they are not it or in any way going to lose the game.

In the 2018 feature film that article has been adapted, with the characters being played by Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Jeremy Renner and Jake Johnson. All of which taking on the articles figures, as they play the game, but with blockbuster levels added to it. From wedding meltdowns, a journalist shocked by the antics and the fights that ensue with the madness that happens, the film shows male friendships in a new way. But sadly they don’t seem to connect with the story as the article did.

Unlike features such as Game Night or even Jumanji, this on-screen game tests audiences by trying to force them to accept what the characters are up to. Sadly, the film fails to make the gags work and at times the script falls apart. The characters are likeable and each figure plays their role well, but there is just an element to it that makes you wonder why on earth they are doing what they do.

The film is also too long for what it is trying to convey. Unlike with the article, which showed this new and outrageous way of life, the characters in this film may make it watchable but there is nothing that makes me want to see another version. Or like the annual event that takes place still, watch a further account of their time. Unless something that is really interesting happens.
