Good Morning Lovelies,

Not many films can claim that they have a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, March of the Penguins 2: The Call can!

Thirteen years after the original, at a time when the world is fighting to beat climate change to protect such animals, the creators have returned to catch up with the creatures. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this new documentary shows a different side of life for the animals. A father and son side.

Highlighting the bond between the two, the documentary captures the early moments the two shares, as the father protects the eggs from the icy cold weather. Before leading on into the secret language the pair builds as they grow older and separate from each other. A very human way metaphorical way of life in some ways. Or maybe the other way around.

Whilst David Attenborough owns all our hearts, this feature will creep in for its own little place. Made in a 4K format, the sounds, close-ups and rapid sequences show how far these animals have come in recent years and the in-depth knowledge they have built on the ways in which we have changed their world.

Freeman may not soothe us in the same way that Attenborough does, but his dramatic narrative adds to the thrill of the piece. The reconnection we have with the animals so often forgotten at sea amongst the bigger faces we have come to know and love too is powerful and the team behind the feature should be proud.

A lot has happened in the time since the first feature, but it doesn’t dull that precious heart wielding emotion we have to them. Something enhances also by the film’s score, which plays out beautifully against each moment the animals face.

Whilst it isn’t as original as the first one, this sequel is one of the best factual return’s, cinema has ever seen. The animals and the close nature we get to experience them in is just as thrilling as a Planet Earth piece. In fact, at times even more so when you think of the wait to reconnect with these animals.

Clever cinematography, narration and thought-provoking moments have there so lead to this...

4 Stars
