Ismael's Ghosts DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

After opening for audiences at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Arnaud Desplechin’s Ismael’s Ghosts is now out on Blu-ray and if mysteries are your thing, then this is one to watch with its marathon of twists and turns.

Following a filmmaker called Ismael, the film sees him have to deal with the return of the wife he thought was dead after she went missing nearly 21 years ago and the way in which his girlfriend deals with her return. Both battling to keep their sanity, the couple are tested by the return leading to audiences being left to guess what they will do to solve it.

With some of the best acting from Mathieu Amalric, Marion Cottilard and Charlotte Gainsbourg ever presented, this film isn’t for the faint-hearted. Testing the patience of the characters and the audience members, there is a huge sense that you have to really hold your tongue with some of the things in which the returning wife does.

Yet, this makes it all the more alluring to watch and to make it to the end, you feel like you have done something huge. Desplechin has attempted to make something different out of a genre that has been done before and succeeded through this audience participation element that probably isn’t even meant to be seen.

There so, I am giving the film…

4 Stars
