Rex DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

If you know me, then you know I love dogs. Any kind of dogs! If you bring one near me I turn into a pile of jelly due to excitement, so when there is a cute dog on my screen you can only imagine how I react. I am just a mess, which is exactly how I was left after watching Rex.

Starring Kate Mara, Edie Falco and Common, the film tells the true story of Megan Leavey, a former US Marine Corporal, who worked as a Military Police K9 handler during her time in service. Working alongside the dog known as Rex, the pair tour Iraq together and face some of the harshest war conditions.

Upon her return, Leavey was given the Purple Heart award and is shown on screen receiving public praise that she totally deserves. However, the limelight is stolen from her due to Rex. Performing his duties as a bomb-sniffing expert with incredible skills, it is hard not to fall in love with him and his work. Yet, the film doesn’t let audiences off easy with an incredibly sad ending.

For a war film, it is a unique feature. Ultimately giving audiences warning that this is a film about the animals of war more so than the people, it instantly tugs at heartstrings. Mara is at her best on screen and the phrase, “never work with animals” completely goes out the window when you see her bond with the dog.

It is an emotional feature that packs a pure punch at the end, leaving you thinking about it for days. Animals can be the true heroes in many stories and don’t get enough credit. There so, by focusing on this story and this animal it makes for an original piece that doesn’t cling on to what other war films have done. It is sad that it wasn’t published more to highlight this.

Overall, Rex is a film that will change the way people think about war. Of course, the humans are who everyone thinks about, but now it will be the canine creatures to. Something cinema and scriptwriters should think about more often within their pieces.

There so, I am giving it…

4 Stars
