Daddy’s Home 2 DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

Now I am going to start this review by saying I don’t normally watch Christmas films in the middle of March. However, I did in the name of reviews, as today marks the release of Daddy’s Home 2 on DVD and Blu-Ray!

After fighting to be the best dad in the first feature, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg return to play Brad (Ferrell) and Dusty (Wahlberg), as they prepare to spend Christmas co-parenting. Joining them for the celebrations is their dads, played by Mel Gibson and John Lithgow, who bring more mayhem than the children!

The first film was a comedy that was made for the whole family to enjoy. It wasn’t a huge box office success, but it worked because of its innocence and fun nature. It was a film that took audiences back to the Father of the Bride kind of cinematic period. Sadly the second one fails to bring this element back to life. And it is mostly due to the introduction of the new characters.

Trying to reinvent the comedy from the first one to suit Gibson and Lithgow’s characters just doesn’t work. It just seems like they are recycling the old film, something that really doesn’t need to be done. Gibson tries to hard to make the film funny and it causes the two main characters to fall flat in what they are trying to achieve. The only character who really works is Lithgow, as the soft grandfather figure.

It feels as though the intrusion and inclusion of these new characters prevent the previous cast members from spreading out. There are many ways they could have been adapted. Ways such as going down the Cheaper by the Dozen route, but this festive fancy just doesn’t do that.

Made for the whole family, it is obvious they have used this knowledge to try and fill in some of the comedy gaps. But they are similar to jokes that we all know and you can guess the reactions scripted into each scene. It is like watching any other comedy or sitcom that has been and gone. And in 2018 audiences and myself need something new.

Failing to make us laugh as much as the first or build on characters in a friendly way, Daddy’s Home 2 makes only half the attempt to keep us entertained. There so, I am giving it...
