The Child in Time DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

When Benedict Cumberbatch announces that he will be starring in a BBC drama, the world and myself go crazy trying to find out everything about it. So, you can imagine what I was like when I heard about The Child in Time.

Starring on the BBC at the start of the month, the TV adaptation of Ian McEwan’s book, was a faithful to the book piece that will be sure to win Cumberbatch some awards, for his portrayal of a grieving father Stephen Lewis, who is suffering after the loss of his daughter.

Working alongside Kelly McDonald, who plays his wife Julie, the adaptation follows the couple as their marriage breaks down after the death of their child, who goes missing after Stephen (Cumberbatch) loses her in a supermarket. Not able to let go Stephen and Julie replay memories that cause them to struggle to stay together.

Cumberbatch’s portrayal is the stand out feature in this show. Whilst the plot can cause confusion as it goes from the search of their daughter to the reversing of their friends mind back into childhood, Cumberbatch stays on top form throughout. It is a role that will make him not only known for what he has done so far but one that will show that there is still so much that we haven’t seen from him yet. A similar element to McDonald’s performance as his wife Julie.

There is a shock factor to the script with the added grief of another loss in the show, just as viewers come to terms with the death of the couple’s daughter Kate and the sad breakdown of the couple’s marriage, which will leave you thinking about the show for days later.

It is a clever portrayal of making audiences think about the child they lost in themselves. It is still there and present but we have tried to lose it. We are placed in an adult world that no one is prepared for and that child still wants to come out many times in the future. Sometimes we just should let it do so.

For its amazing acting, cleverly adapted script and a tragic storyline, this show outdid itself in its near two hour run time. There so I am giving it…
