Erik The Conqueror DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

Back in the 60s, the director Mario Bava became a household name for taking on the historical genre and giving viewers Erik the Conqueror, a story inspired by the earlier works of Kirk Douglas and the different genres historical features were taking on.

Set in 786 AD, the film captures Viking forces being made to leave England. However, they forget one of their own, a young boy called Erik, who is the son of a Viking king. After years spent raised by an English queen, Erik is forced to go to war with his unknown to him brother, who is now head of the Viking army.

The film takes the classic genre and gives audiences its first look at the ways in which the historical genre could be explored. With the aesthetic taking on the period era well, the film has a certain glamour about it even in the arms of a war.

It seems as though filmmakers were actually more concerned about the way in which the film looked and sounded then the plot. Whilst it is a strong feature for building the historical genre in film history, the real winner of this film is the look and the score. A score that is so well created by Roberto Nicolosi, which leaves chills and thrills running through its viewers.

Overall, the film is a feature made to be looked at. But the plot isn’t one that makes you interested in it. Erik the Conqueror is a feature to watch and breath in its aesthetic beauty and sound, but not one to pay much attention to if you are looking for a history lesson.

There so I am giving the film…

3 Stars
