Kingsman: The Golden Circle DVD Review

Good Afternoon Lovelies,

Kingsman: The Secret Service was a film phenomenon for many of us when it first came out. Delving into the world of Eggsy, his mentor Harry and the world of the secret service Kingsman, the film took a hold of the spy genre and gave it a complete suited and booted makeover.

After a long wait, the much-anticipated sequel to the film, Kingsman: The Golden Circle arrives on DVD, Blu-ray and digitally as of today and Eggsy is being welcomed back widely. Following on from the events of the first film, the story picks up a year after Eggsy and Merlin are forced to take down an evil corporation threatening the world. And the same thing is continuing.

Apart from a few things. Now in a committed relationship with Princess Tilde of Sweden, Eggsy (Taron Egerton) has taken over from his old mentor Harry (Galahad) (Colin Firth) and is working hard to take down the evil Poppy (Julianne Moore), a drug owner who runs her own 50s style world known as Poppyland. Wanting to be rid of the Kingsman, Poppy blows up their headquarters and homes to prevent them from stopping her plans to kill all of those who take her drugs, by poisoning them. Elton John (The real Elton John) included, whom she is happily holding prisoner.

Never one to back down, Eggsy and Merlin (Mark Strong) use the doomsday protocol to discover their American ally, Statesman, made up of Champagne (Jeff Bridges), Tequila (Channing Tatum), Whisky (Pablo Pascal) and Ginger (Halle Berry). A group of people who are willing to help them save future lives and members of their old team too.

Whilst I will admit the plot isn't as strong as the first film, there is still a lot of love to be had with this. From the moment the film begins and Eggsy is captured in a Prince soundtrack featured fight with Charlie (Edward Holcroft) from the previous film, you know that this film is going to go all out on action and stunts. It is no longer a getting to grips or coming of age film, but what to do when you have all this knowledge one. And that is - save the world.

With most of the film set in America, the British charm that the first film had is lost a little, but with the reappearance of Firth's Harry and the ever-brilliant Merlin, there are many moments where it is brought back. Especially with a singing Merlin, which is a sad but hilarious reflection of a drunken night out that is going to end with a big event.

There is only one scene really where all charm is lost entirely - a fingering scene with new character Clara (Poppy Delevingne), the girlfriend of Charlie, at Glastonbury, which takes the film to an entirely different place. Let's just say it is a science lesson on implants! And you won’t be able to look at a burger the same after witnessing Moore’s Poppy’s method of getting rid of her victims. Vegan is the way to go after this film lovelies.

The action is the blood type that runs through this film’s veins. To begin with they can be quite fast paced and then be dragging, especially the first fight, which happens so quickly your brain doesn’t have time to adjust. But by the end of it, you have this need for more to come. It is the badness inside you that wants it.

The final blowout with everyone involved is what Kingman’s is all about and it does not disappoint. Especially when a cussing Elton John is protecting Colin Firth from two robot dogs called Bennie and Jet in a very colourful outfit.

As for the acting, Egerton is still as loveable as he was in the first film. He is the class clown act, with now double the class. In the Golden Circle, sadly we lose the element of seeing Eggsy learning the ropes still. He appears to have learnt it all in a time that we didn't get to see. It would have been nice to see how he reacted to his first mission and what happened in the aftermath of returning home and defeating the evil figures threatening his mum.

Put him with Firth, Strong and newcomers Berry, Tatum, Pascal and Bridges and you have a film that oozes A-list talent that is stand out. All bring something to the table; however, I do have to say it would have been nice to see more of the American team. Tatum started out as a very promising character, but he wasn’t featured as much as it seems. This is something if a third film was to be made could build on though.

As for the villain of the film, Moore’s character is a sadistic one who shows that sugar and sweet don’t always mix up all things nice. It would have been great to have seen more of her being sinister instead of others on screen. The lack of an actual fight and easy death was disappointing compared to the first film’s villains demise.

Many sequels don’t match up to the first film. It is something lots of us film fans are familiar with. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is one of them. But it does not mean that it isn’t a film that doesn’t deserve to be watched. It is just a film that is different. It has grown with Eggsy and the characters and it is able to set up the next film if there is to be one. How this would be developed is an interesting process though lovelies. Director Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goodman could do it though.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle has earned this…
