Good Morning Lovelies,

Ask anyone and they will tell you that when you cast a film with Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender and they will tell you that you are onto a real winner. In Song to Song, the foursome brings the musical genre into a new wave with new troubles and strives alongside it.

Following Faye, played by Mara, the film sees her falling under the charms of Fassbender’s music mogul Cook and songwriter BV, played by Gosling. As BV tries to prove he is the good guy out of their relationship, Cook causes drama between Faye and BV by trying to make a copyright issue bigger than it is. Complex is one way to describe the relationship lovelies when a love triangle doesn’t really cut it.

Mara, Fassbender and Cook all make for a dynamic that can change and show their characters emotions well. They manipulate them and in the end, you find that this clever use of emotions as a plot hole, makes it hard for you to know who to like, trust or even root for.

As their lives get darker and the need for calm comes about, the film tries to find that in more rounded characters including Portman, who plays a waitress and Cate Blanchett who appears in the film. Both who make the others realise there is life beyond their music filled relationship.

Director Terrence Malick brings a sense of life to the feature throughout with the heightened human emotions. With each element giving the feeling that the story could have got lost in the Hollywood famed love triangle and musical genre. Malick brings the character's uncertainty into the front and pushes back any sense of calm for the audience. It is an element that you constantly tug on or need for when watching, but a feeling that also keeps you watching.

Further more, what works, even more, to make the film so enjoyable the incredible VIP faces who cameo within it and allow their songs to be used. With the likes of Patti Smith, Iggy Pop and the Red Hot Chili Peppers joining the cast, your foot never stops tapping. It is an eclectic journey from the 80s right up until now. A love triangle of the decades if I dare say so.

Overall, the film is a cult hit that will stand out amongst other Malick films, as it shows true power in the raw human emotions that are longed for in characters. There so I am giving the film…
