Unlocked DVD Review

Good Morning Lovelies,

Over the years, the spy genre has been overtaken by directors who are trying to change. Some have been incredibly successful (Kingsman I am looking at you) and some not so much. Unlocked sadly falls in the not so successful category. Starring Orlando Bloom and Noomi Rapace, the film tries to make Bourne shake in his boots but instead makes him stand up stronger.

Directed by Michael Apted, the film captures CIA analyst Alice try to overcome the horrors of the terrorist attack she witnessed in Paris, by starting a new life in London. However, the threats follow her and soon she is joined by Bloom’s character and Michael Douglas to try and overcome them.

With all that is happening in the world at the moment, the themes and the plot of this film feels very delicate to touch upon. Unlocked is obviously trying to touch upon what is happening in the world right now, but the freshness of it isn’t done in a way that makes for easy viewing. Seeing the darkness in Alice makes you think about what others are facing and there so you can’t sit down and watch this comfortably.

Apted is a great filmmaker, but his latest feature has been lost in a cycle of other films that are better at holding up the spy genre and presenting more thrills. Audiences will be shocked by some of the content and emotions explored in this film, due to the lack of care in some details such as the plot and the character relationships.

There so I am giving the film…

2 Stars
