The Big Knife DVD Review

07:30:00

Good Morning Lovelies,

Robert Aldrich was a man who knew how to command the screen! He knew how to make an audience be won over by a film and it is probably the reason why his feature, The Big Knife, won the Silver Lion at the 1955 Venice Film Festival.

Joined by Jack Palance, Rod Steiger, Ida Lupino and Everett Sloane, the film follows Charles Castle, a man who makes up one of Hollywood’s biggest film stars. However, not everything as silver lined as the screen star wants people to believe.

His marriage is falling apart and his work isn’t what it once was. Something audiences viewing his films have noticed. The film presents the dark side of Hollywood and fame to its audience members. It is a piece that highlights that just because something seems a certain way, it may not actually be that way at all.

However, where the film works at bringing audiences a new look at what can happen behind the scenes of Hollywood, it doesn’t work so well in bringing the story to life. Many scenes drag and it all becomes very boring about three-quarters of the way through.

With all this in mind, I am going to give it…

3 Stars
