Since starring in Captain Phillips, Barkhad Abdi’s career has taken off and rightfully so. The young actor continues to take on complicated roles that highlight his talents and in his latest release, Extortion, he brings a whole audience appeal by himself.

Also, starring Danny Glover and Bethany Joy Lenz, the film follows a young doctor who is working hard to secure his family futures is safe. However, as he continues to work hard, he finds that the relationships he is trying to help save are being destroyed. So, they decide to go on a family trip away with their son.

Yet, the trip takes a dark turn as they find themselves trapped on an island being held ransom by a local fisherman who is demanding they give him $1million to keep their family safe. The film is interesting in its development of a storyline and it definitely knows how to hook you in, mostly through Abdi’s performance, but there are a few things that make the film lack in appeal.

Placing Abdi in a role like this was always going to be amazing because we have kind of already seen him play this role before in CP. Don’t get me wrong he is brilliant and probably the reason to watch this film, but it would have been nice to see him developed more on screen or given a different role in the film.
