TRIPLE 9 DVD REVIEW...14:19:00
Known for his great films, including ‘Lawless, director John Hillcoat’s latest film ‘Triple 9’ has an all-star cast. However, they are unable to save this film from becoming the over the top, at times boring, feature film that is does.
Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Casey Affleck, the film is about a bank heist that goes wrong and the members of the team that decide to try and take on the fight. It is a cop film mashed with the undermining story of those robbing the bank. Throughout you find that you want the bad guys to win, because the good guys are too much on screen.
The script is a tightly knitted piece, but it isn’t enough to save the cast from having to go on a mad one – literally- to pull it off. The idea behind cracking the 999 code is a clever one but an idea that has been done so many times before it is actually quite hard to see how they wouldn’t pull it off in a world where so many films are made around: ironic I know.
Speaking of the cast before, it is really the women in this film that stand out the most. If the film had featured more of Kate Winslet and the brilliant Gal Gadot, then this film would have been brilliant. Ejiofor and Affleck do an amazing job, but the women in the film win this one.
It would have just been better if they had been given more of a chance to speak in a story and plot that was constantly changing and letting down the strong script that the actors had.
There so I am giving the film…
